NOVELTY - Production of graphite oxide involves chemically oxidizing the carbon source by reacting an alkali metal ion, an oxidant and a carbon source in distilled water or a hydrophilic organic solvent, adding hydrogen peroxide to the oxidized reactant and stirring to terminate the reaction, and washing the reactant from which the reaction is terminated to produce graphite oxide. The alkali metal ion is at least one chosen from sodium hydroxide, potassium hydroxide and bromine hydroxide. The oxidizing agent is at least one chosen from osmium tetroxide, potassium permanganate, potassium chlorate, perchloric acid and hydrogen peroxide. USE - Production of graphite oxide in manufacture of graphene (claimed) used for high-performance polymer composite materials for electrical and electronic devices. ADVANTAGE - The method enables efficient and economical production of graphene oxide having increased conductivity, improved rate of formation, and reduced production time. DETAILED DESCRIPTION - An INDEPENDENT CLAIM is included for manufacture of graphene, which involves (I) adding graphite oxide onto an organic solvent or distilled water, (II) exfoliating graphite oxide in the organic solvent or distilled water through shear stress or ultrasonically dispersing to produce graphene oxide, and (III) preparing graphene by adding a reducing agent to the graphene oxide.
