NOVELTY - Battery comprises a housing containing a cathode including a carbon material, an anode (2) including a metal, a separator (4) between the cathode and the anode and an electrolyte (3) contacting the anode and the cathode, and the electrolyte including a redox mediator. The metal includes sodium, magnesium, aluminum, zinc, calcium, copper or iron. The carbon material includes a conductive carbon material including graphene, graphite, carbon black, carbon fibers, carbon microfibers, carbon nanomaterial, carbon nanotube, multi-walled nanotube carbon, single walled carbon nanotube, biotemplated carbon materials, molecular templated multi-walled nanotube carbon or biotemplated single walled carbon nanotube. The electrolyte includes an organic salt. The redox mediator includes an iodide salt (preferred) or a bromide salt. The anode includes aluminum. USE - Used as battery, where the battery is rechargeable or a flow cell battery (all claimed). ADVANTAGE - The battery: reduces at least a portion of carbon dioxide; has a capacity of greater than 7000, preferably greater than 9000 mAh/g; has energy density of greater than 4 Wh/g, preferably greater than 64 Wh/g; has an energy efficiency of greater than 90%, preferably greater than 95%; is cost effective; requires less stringent control of oxygen and moisture during cell fabrication, hence easily manufactured; and safely handled. DETAILED DESCRIPTION - INDEPENDENT CLAIMS are also included for: (1) sequestering carbon dioxide; and (2) providing electric power.
