NOVELTY - Electrochemical alkalization of electrochemically active material, comprises: (a) obtaining a working electrode comprising working electrode material on current collector, the material comprising electrochemically active material, optionally binder and/or electronically conductive material; (b) introduction of working electrode into electrochemical reactor in continuous and/or batch mode with inert counter-electrode, and a solution comprising alkali metal salt in solvent; (c) application of direct current between working electrode and counter electrode to alkaline electrode comprising alkaline electrochemically active material; and (d) removing the alkaline electrode obtained in step (c) from electrochemical reactor, where the electrochemically active material comprises a metal oxide (including complex oxides), metal phosphate, metal silicate, metal sulfate. USE - The method is useful for electrochemical alkalization of electrochemically active material to electrode for battery i.e. lithium battery or lithium ion battery to use in mobile devices, e.g. mobile phones, cameras, tablets or laptops, in electric or hybrid vehicles or in storage renewable energy (all claimed). ADVANTAGE - The method: has several advantages (economic and environmental) compared to the use of a reducing agent without its regeneration; and utilizes electrode material reduces possibility of using much higher current densities and increasing productivity of electrochemical reactor. DETAILED DESCRIPTION - INDEPENDENT CLAIMS are also included for: (1) electrochemical alkalization of an electrochemically active material, comprising (i) adding the electrochemically active material to a solution containing a reducing agent and an alkali metal salt in a solvent to produce an alkaline electrochemically active material, (ii) separation of the alkaline electrochemically active material and the solution, and (iii) electrochemical treatment of the solution separated in step (ii) to regenerate the reducing agent in the solution; (2) electrode comprising the alkaline electrochemically active material, a binder and optionally an electronically conductive material; (3) electrochemical cell comprising a negative electrode, a positive electrode and an electrolyte, in which the positive electrode is an electrode; and (4) battery comprising at least one electrochemical cell.
