NOVELTY - Production of isolated graphene sheet (16) involves forming intercalated coke or coal compound (12) by electrochemical intercalation using intercalation reactor, and exfoliating and separating hexagonal carbon atomic interlayers from the intercalated coke or coal compound. The intercalation reactor contains a liquid solution electrolyte comprising intercalating agent, and a working electrode containing coke or coal powder (10) chosen from petroleum coke, coal-derived coke, meso-phase coke, synthetic coke, leonardite, anthracite, lignite coal, bituminous coal, and natural coal mineral powder. USE - Production of isolated graphene sheet e.g. single-layer or multilayer graphene sheet for composite material and energy storage application. ADVANTAGE - The method is capable of producing isolated graphene sheets having excellent electrical conductivity, with reduced amount of undesirable chemicals, less energy consumption, lower degree of graphene oxidation, and reduced or eliminated effluents of undesirable chemical species into the drainage or into the air, in a short period of time. DETAILED DESCRIPTION - Production of isolated graphene sheet involves forming an intercalated coke or coal compound by electrochemical intercalation using an intercalation reactor, and exfoliating and separating hexagonal carbon atomic interlayers from the intercalated coke or coal compound by ultrasonic processing, thermal shock exposure, and mechanical shearing treatment. The intercalation reactor comprises a liquid solution electrolyte comprising an intercalating agent, a working electrode containing the coke or coal powder as an active material in ionic contact with the liquid solution electrolyte, and a counter electrode in ionic contact with the liquid solution electrolyte. The coke or coal is chosen from petroleum coke, coal-derived coke, meso-phase coke, synthetic coke, leonardite, anthracite, lignite coal, bituminous coal, and natural coal mineral powder. The isolated graphene sheets is obtained from a supply of coke or coal powder containing domains of hexagonal carbon atoms and/or hexagonal carbon atomic interlayers with an interlayer spacing. The current is imposed upon the working and counter electrodes at current density for preset time for effecting electrochemical intercalation of the intercalating agent into the interlayer spacing.
