NOVELTY - A composite material comprises a thermosetting polymer reinforced with natural fibers. USE - Composite material is used as composite plate for ballistic shielding layer of multilayer armor and multilayer ballistic system for protecting against rifle shots with 7.62 mm or 5.56 mm caliber ammunition (all claimed). ADVANTAGE - The composite material has good adhesiveness of the dispersed phase which is natural fibers, and the polymeric matrix as the continuous phase, and has optimized thickness which reduces the weight of the multilayer shielding system. DETAILED DESCRIPTION - INDEPENDENT CLAIMS are included for the following: manufacture of the composite material, which involves accommodating piassava fibers functionalized with graphene oxide, corresponding to a desired proportion of 30 vol.%, inside a suitable metallic mold, adding a polyester resin which is a still fluid, and covering the mold; a ceramic material, which has a thickness of 7-10 mm, and is obtained using 4 %mass alumina-doped with niobia with a hexagonal geometry, weighing and packing alumina, niobia and polyethylene glycol powders, in liquid phase, in an alumina ball mill for 12 hours, and maintaining for 48 hours in an oven at 80° C for drying; manufacture of the ceramic material, which involves macerating and sieving to obtain the powder, pressing under a pressure of 30 MPa, and sintering the pressed compact in an oven; and a multilayer armor, which comprises the composite material as a composite plate glued with a polyurethane adhesive to a front ceramic layer responsible for eroding the projectile and attenuating its impact.
