NOVELTY - A graphene -containing rubber composition comprises butyl rubber and graphene as plate. The rubber composition further comprises butyl rubber, carbon black, naphthenic oil, aromatic hydrocarbon resin, aliphatic hydrocarbon resin, phenolic tackifier, accelerator, stearic acid, zinc oxide and sulfur. The graphene of the composition, has thickness less than 3.2 nm, particle size 50-nm - 10 μm, and comprises more than 95 wt.% carbon. USE - Rubber composition is used in tire innerliners of new generation vehicles such as electric powered automobiles. ADVANTAGE - The presence of graphene as an additive in rubber composition, enables the composition to provide increased barrier protection for tire innerliners, with no tradeoffs in other characteristics. DETAILED DESCRIPTION - An INDEPENDENT CLAIM is included for the method used for compounding rubber, which involves: 1) blending butyl rubber with graphene; 2) exfoliating graphene into plates, by adding carboxylic acid, ketone, aldehyde, or hydroxyl groups on the graphene plate surface or graphene plate edges; and 3) aligning the graphene plates into perpendicular alignment, such that the graphene plates provide a barrier to migration of oxygen, nitrogen, moisture or water vapor molecules.
