NOVELTY - Graphene substrate comprises edge and non-edge regions, where organic or inorganic molecules are bound to the edge regions of the substrate at a population greater than one molecule per 10000 nm. USE - As graphene substrate. DETAILED DESCRIPTION - An INDEPENDENT CLAIM is included for method for functionalizing the graphene substrate, which involves (a) obtaining a graphene substrate that has edge regions and non-edge regions, where the edge regions comprise carboxylic acid moieties, epoxy moieties or hydroxyl moieties, and (b) reacting the carboxylic acid moieties, epoxy moieties or hydroxyl moieties with a Nu-M, where the Nu is a nucleophilic moiety and M is an attached organic or inorganic moiety.
