NOVELTY - Inventions relate to the field of catalysis. Described is a nickel-containing carbon-graphene hydrogenation catalyst for the production of magnesium-based hydrogen storage materials, containing nickel nanoparticles with a size of 2-5 nm in an amount of 6-17 wt. %, which are fixed at the ends of carbon nanofibers and are evenly distributed on the surface of the graphene material. A method for preparing the above catalyst is described, including the addition of an aqueous solution of nickel salt Ni(CH3COO)2 to an aqueous suspension of graphite oxide, freeze drying of an aqueous suspension of graphite oxide-Ni (CH3COO)2, reduction of graphite oxide and nickel (II), and the reduction of graphite oxide and nickel(II) is carried out with an Ar:H2:C2H4 gas mixture containing ethylene, while simultaneously synthesizing carbon nanofibers in the flow of this Ar:H2:C2H4 mixture at a temperature of 700C.
