NOVELTY - Preparation of graphene oxide and functionalized graphene oxide powder from Aeschynomene aspera plant, involves: (a) drying the A. aspera plant by heating at temperature in the range of 200-700 degrees C; (b) heating the dried A. aspera plant at temperature ranging between 700-2000 degrees C for a time period of 10-300 minutes in an argon atmosphere of pressure in the range of 100-500 sccm to obtain graphene oxide powder; (c) simultaneously, preparing 0.001-1.000 M precursor solution of the respective functional groups and immersing the dried A. aspera plant. USE - The process is useful for the preparation of graphene oxide and functionalized graphene oxide powder from Aeschynomene aspera plant (claimed). ADVANTAGE - The process provides the following advantages: avoids the use of toxic chemicals like hydrochloric acid (HCl), phosphoric acid (H3PO4), nitric acid (HNO3) and sulfuric acid (H2SO4); is an eco-friendly process; functionalization of graphene oxide can be done easily with a variety of elements; the prepared functionalized graphene oxide exhibits magnetism at room temperature; and the produced graphene oxide and functionalized graphene oxide are well dispersible in oil with long stabilization time period. DETAILED DESCRIPTION - Preparation of graphene oxide and functionalized graphene oxide powder from Aeschynomene aspera plant, involves: (a) drying the A. aspera plant by heating at temperature in the range of 200-700 degrees C for a time period of 10-300 minutes in air; (b) heating the dried A. aspera plant as obtained in step (a) at temperature ranging between 700-2000 degrees C for a time period of 10-300 minutes in an argon atmosphere of pressure in the range of 100-500 sccm to obtain graphene oxide powder; (c) simultaneously, preparing 0.001-1.000 M precursor solution of the respective functional groups selected from nitrogen (N), sulfur (S), chlorine (Cl), iodine (I), fluorine (F), phosphorus (P), nickel (Ni), zinc (Zn), manganese (Mn), iron (Fe), cobalt (Co), chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), nickel (Ni), zirconium (Zr), silver (Ag), gold (Au) and platinum (Pt) and immersing the dried A. aspera plant as obtained in step (a) in the solutions either individually or in combination and allowing to stand for 10-120 minutes; (d) heating the chemical absorbed A. aspera plant as obtained in step (c) in an argon atmosphere of pressure in the range of 100-500 sccm at temperature ranging between 700-2000 degrees C for a time period of 10-300 minutes so as to obtain the functionalized graphene oxide powder.
