NOVELTY - Preparing glycol by hydration of alkylene oxide, comprises contacting alkylene oxide and water with composite ion exchange resin catalyst under the hydration reaction condition to obtain final product, where the ion exchange resin catalyst is (I), where the nano-carbon material composite ion exchange resin matrix contains structural fragments that connect the nano-carbon material with the benzene ring in the matrix through an ester group. USE - The method is useful for preparing glycol by hydration of alkylene oxide. DETAILED DESCRIPTION - Preparing glycol by hydration of alkylene oxide, comprises contacting alkylene oxide and water with composite ion exchange resin catalyst under the hydration reaction condition to obtain final product, where the ion exchange resin catalyst is of formula (I), where the nano-carbon material composite ion exchange resin matrix contains structural fragments that connect the nano-carbon material with the benzene ring in the matrix through an ester group. ring P = nano-carbon material composite ion exchange resin matrix; M- = anion including bicarbonate ion, hydroxide ion, bisulfite ion, carboxylate ion or citrate ion; R6, R7, and R8 = 1-10C alkyl groups, preferably 1-4C alkyl groups, more preferably methyl groups, or aromatic groups CxHy; x = 1-10; y = 3-21; and R = alkylene or arylene. An INDEPENDENT CLAIM is also included for catalyst for hydration of alkylene oxide to produce diol.
