NOVELTY - Fabricating a graphene oxide material involves: providing a substrate; depositing a graphene layer onto the substrate; and oxidizing at least a portion of the graphene layer, with a dry oxidation technique for a period of time sufficient to obtain a band gap, where the oxidation is confined to the graphene layer. USE - For fabricating a graphene oxide material (claimed). ADVANTAGE - The method allows for a versatile but precise manipulation of graphene so as to develop graphene oxide material that possesses an appreciable, and determinable, band gap, and in which the oxidation is confined to the graphene layer.
