NOVELTY - Separation of a lithium chloride solution (10) from a lithium containing brine (14) involves passing brine through a perforated (18) graphene sheet (16) which is proportioned so as to allow the passage of water and all non-target impurities, while retaining a residue of lithium chloride (20). USE - Separation of lithium chloride solution used for battery applications such as lithium ion batteries. ADVANTAGE - The method provides high purity lithium chloride with reduced contaminants and impurities. DETAILED DESCRIPTION - An INDEPENDENT CLAIM is included for lithium chloride separation apparatus, which has at least one graphene sheet, an inlet by which lithium containing brine is fed to the or each graphene sheet, and at least one outlet by which filtrate may pass away from the perforated graphene sheet after passing through.
