NOVELTY - An integrated layer of highly oriented halogenated graphene sheets or molecules is produced by preparing either graphene oxide dispersion having graphene oxide sheets dispersed in fluid medium or graphene oxide gel having graphene oxide molecules dissolved in fluid medium in which graphene oxide sheets or graphene oxide molecules contain greater than or equal to 5 wt.% oxygen, and dispensing and depositing layer of graphene oxide dispersion or graphene oxide gel onto surface of supporting substrate under shear stress condition to form wet layer of graphene oxide on supporting substrate. USE - Production of integrated layer of highly oriented halogenated graphene sheets or molecules used as dielectric material component for microelectronic devices. ADVANTAGE - Method is cost-effective and produces thicker films of graphene-derived materials that exhibit high dielectric breakdown strength, high dielectric constants, adequate mechanical strength, good thermal stability and good chemical stability. DETAILED DESCRIPTION - An integrated layer of highly oriented halogenated graphene sheets or molecules is produced by preparing either graphene oxide dispersion having graphene oxide sheets dispersed in fluid medium or graphene oxide gel having graphene oxide molecules dissolved in fluid medium in which graphene oxide sheets or graphene oxide molecules contain greater than or equal to 5 wt.% oxygen, dispensing and depositing layer of graphene oxide dispersion or graphene oxide gel onto surface of supporting substrate under shear stress condition by shear-induced thinning of graphene oxide dispersion or gel and shear-induced orientation of graphene oxide sheets or molecules, to form wet layer of graphene oxide on supporting substrate, and either introducing halogenating agent into wet layer of graphene oxide and effecting chemical reaction between halogenating agent and graphene oxide sheets or molecules to form wet layer of halogenated graphene and removing fluid medium from wet layer of halogenated graphene (i) or removing fluid medium from wet layer of graphene oxide to form dried layer of graphene oxide and introducing halogenating agent into dried layer of graphene oxide and effecting chemical reaction between halogenating agent and graphene oxide sheets or molecules, to form dried integrated layer of halogenated graphene having chemical formula of C6ZxOy (ii). Integrated layer of halogenated graphene has inter-planar spacing d0.02 of 0.35-1.2 nm as determined by X-ray diffraction. Z=F, Cl, Br, and/or I; x=0.01-6; y=0-5; and x+y= less than or equal to 6.
