NOVELTY - Information handling system 10 comprises a portable housing 12 having handle, a processor is disposed in the housing and operable to execute instructions that process information, and memory disposed in the housing and interfaced with the processor. The memory is operable to store the instructions and information. A display unit 18 is integrated in the portable housing and it is operable to present the information as visual images. A graphics processor unit is interfaced with the processor and the display. The graphics processor is operable to process the information to generate pixel values that define visual images for presentation at the display. A loop heat pipe is interfaced with a heat sink disposed in the housing and routed from the heat sink through the handle and back to the heat sink. A phase change material is disposed in the handle and operable to capture thermal energy from the loop heat pipe by transitioning from a solid state to liquid state. USE - Information handling system for processing, compiling, storing, and/or communicating information or data for business, personal or other purposes used in financial transaction processing, airline reservations, enterprise data storage, or global communications. ADVANTAGE - The portable information handling system manages thermal energy to support enhanced processing component operations in a variety of configurations. The articulation of a cooling fan bay to reduce cooling airflow impedance improves thermal rejection by approximately 18% with a resulting improvement in system thermal parameters, including maintaining a desired housing exterior temperature. The thermal parameters increase CPU turbo duration at 120 W of power for 228 seconds with the cooling fan running at a low power setting. DETAILED DESCRIPTION - INDEPENDENT CLAIMS are included for: (1) Method for managing thermal energy generated at an information handling system, which involves: (1) thermally interfacing a processing component of the information handling system with a heat pipe; (2) routing the heat pipe through a handle of a housing of the information handling system; (3) transferring thermal energy from the processing component through the heat pipe to the handle for rejection to an external environment; (4) disposing a phase change material in the handle; (5) absorbing the thermal energy by transitioning the phase change material from a solid state to a liquid state; and (6) releasing the thermal energy by transitioning the phase change material from the liquid state back to the solid state. (2) Thermal management system which comprises a heat sink configured to receive thermal energy from a processing component, heat pipe loop interfaced with of the heat sink at first and second ends of the heat pipe loop, a handle configured to couple to an information handling system housing, heat pipe loop passing through the handle, and a thermal wax disposed in the handle proximate the heat pipe loop, the thermal wax transitioning from a solid phase to a liquid phase to store excess thermal energy.
