NOVELTY - An anode material comprises anode-material particles containing an internal phase containing lithium vanadium oxide, and a surface coating arranged on external surfaces of the internal phase. The lithium vanadium oxide is reversibly lithiated, and the surface coating contains at least one selected from carbon, metal oxide, metalloid oxide, metal fluoride, metalloid fluoride, metal phosphate, metalloid phosphate, and their combinations. USE - Material used for forming anode used for cell (all claimed) e.g. rechargeable lithium ion battery. Uses include but are not limited to electric vehicle, smart device, personal computer, and high power portable devices. ADVANTAGE - None given. DETAILED DESCRIPTION - An anode material comprises anode-material particles containing an internal phase containing lithium vanadium oxide of formula: LiaVbOc, where a is 0.001-10, b is 1-3 and c is 1-9, and a surface coating arranged on external surfaces of the internal phase. The lithium vanadium oxide is reversibly lithiated, and the surface coating contains at least one selected from carbon, metal oxide, metalloid oxide, metal fluoride, metalloid fluoride, metal phosphate, metalloid phosphate, and their combinations. INDEPENDENT CLAIMS are included for the following: anode, which comprises the anode material; ynthesis of anode material, which involves applying a reducing agent containing lithium to precursor material containing vanadium oxide and/or lithium vanadium oxide to generate reduced material, introducing the surface coating to the reduced material, and recovering anode material; and manufacture of cell using the anode material.
