NOVELTY - An electrochemical cell comprises magnesium anode, cathode based on sulfurated poly(acrylonitrile) (SPAN), separator, and halogen-free electrolyte comprising non-halogen lithium salt and non-halogen magnesium salt in a solvent, where separator and electrolyte are arranged between the cathode and the anode. USE - An electrochemical cell for battery or battery stack for energy storage, where battery or battery stack is electrically charged, for use in a car, preferably electrocar or hybrid car, truck, preferably electrotruck or hybrid truck, airplane, drone, helicopter, or ship, and for use in a stationary application (all claimed). ADVANTAGE - The cells show high discharge capacities of up to 800 mAh/g sulfur at about 100% Coulombic efficiency and high cycle stability.
