NOVELTY - Preparing hard carbon material, comprises (i) dissolving phenolic resin in organic solvent, adding conductive additives, and drying to obtain a treated phenolic resin compound, (ii) heating in atmosphere containing oxygen to obtain pre-oxidized particles, (iii) cooling pre-oxidized particles and grinding to obtain powder, and (iv) carbonizing powder in step (iii) at a high temperature under inert atmosphere and ball milling to obtain hard carbon material. USE - The hard carbon material is useful in sodium battery cathode material (claimed). ADVANTAGE - The hard carbon material has high reversible capacity, high first cycle Coulombic efficiency, and excellent cycle stability. The method is simple, and utilizes cheap and easily available raw materials. DETAILED DESCRIPTION - INDEPENDENT CLAIMS are also included for: (1) hard carbon material obtained by above method; and (2) sodium battery cathode material comprising hard carbon material, conductive additives, binders and solvents.
