NOVELTY - Method for synthesizing medium for fast, selective oil-water separation and/or oil absorption, involves providing a toluene solution containing a polymer or its mixture, immersing porous wool-like structure (PW) in toluene solution for period of time, and removing immersed PW from toluene solution and heat-treating immersed PW to obtain medium comprising polymer-modified PW, where the polymer or its mixture is adapted such that the medium is a superwetting material that is superhydrophobic and superoleophilic under water or salty water. USE - Method for synthesizing medium for fast, selective oil-water separation and/or oil absorption. ADVANTAGE - The superwetting material is recyclable and absorbate-retrievable, and chemical, mechanical and environmentally stable. The porous material is simple and cost-effective. The modified PW not only shows high absorption performance, including high selectivity, high recyclability and good capacity, but it can also continuously, quickly absorb and remove large amount of various oils/organic solvents from both calm and turbulent water. The polydimethylsiloxane-modified PW is a promising material for water remediation, cleaning up largescale oil spillages and oil recovery.
