NOVELTY - The component (100) has a plastic polymer-based composite layer (106) formed on a substrate. The composite layer comprises a matrix of plastic polymer-based material with functionalized graphene nano platelets distributed throughout the matrix. The functionalized graphene nano platelets comprise graphene nano platelets that are functionalized with carboxylic functional groups and ammonia functional groups. The functionalized graphene nano platelets comprise mean average of 11 layers. USE - Sliding engine component i.e. sliding bearing assembly component such as half bearing shell, thrust washer e.g. semi-annular, annular or circular thrust washers, and bearing bush, for an engine (all claimed) i.e. internal combustion engine. Can also be used for sliding bearing surfaces of crankshafts, bearing surfaces of camshafts, bearing surfaces of connecting rods, flanges, bearing surfaces of a bearing block, bearing surfaces of a bearing cap, and piston assembly components e.g. piston rings, piston skirts, and cylinder walls and cylinder liners. ADVANTAGE - The component uses the functionalized graphene nano platelets with layers to provide improved balance between enhancement in strength of the composite layer that is provided by the functionalized graphene nano platelets with a small number of layers, and enhancement in lubrication performance of the composite layer in an event of direct contact with a cooperating moving part that is provided by a greater number of layers, and improve fatigue performance, obstruct propagation of fractures in a composite overlay layer, and reduce material wear of the composite overlay layer. The component facilitates partial fictionalization to provide improved dispersion performance while providing improved bonding performance to matrix material. The component uses exposed functionalized graphene nano platelets at the bearing surface to increase lubricious properties of a free surface and reduce friction of the composite layer in an event that the journaled shaft contacts the bearing surface. DETAILED DESCRIPTION - An INDEPENDENT CLAIM is also included for a flat sheet element for forming a sliding engine component for an internal combustion engine.
