NOVELTY - Manufacture of graphene oxide involves adding 3 g graphite to a mixture of sulfuric acid and concentrated phosphoric acid in weight ratio of 9:1, slowly stirring at 5 degrees C, adding potassium permanganate, heating the mixture at 50 degrees C for 12 hours, adding 3 ml 30% hydrogen peroxide solution, filtering to separate graphene oxide yellow precipitate solids from the solution, rinsing with 300 ml water, repeating 3 times, further washing with 100 ml methanol 2 times, and washing the solids with diethyl ether. USE - Manufacture of graphene oxide for preparing platinum-graphene composite catalyst (claimed) for electrode of fuel cell e.g. direct ethanol fuel cell. ADVANTAGE - Graphene oxide capable of producing catalyst product with the ability to oxidize alcohols including methanol and ethanol can be manufactured. DETAILED DESCRIPTION - An INDEPENDENT CLAIM is included for manufacture of platinum-graphene composite catalyst, which involves mixing 1 g graphene oxide with 150 ml methanol and 50 ml distilled water, adding 0.1 g chloroplatinic acid hexahydrate, stirring for 3 hours, ultrasonically stirring for 2 hours, adding ascorbic acid solution, stirring for 5 hours at room temperature, filtering, rinsing with 200 ml distilled water 3 times, and drying in vacuum oven at 60 degrees C for 5 hours.
