NOVELTY - Composite material comprises an electrically conductive material formed from polymer particles, an electrical conductor, and an ionic conductor; and a textile or foam substrate. The polymer particles comprise acrylonitrile butadiene rubber (NBR), natural rubber, silicone, silicone acrylic, polyurethane, polyvinylidene fluoride, PVC, or a fluoropolymer. The electrical conductor comprises carbon nanotubes, graphene or graphite structures, and/or metal nanowires. The ionic and electrical conductors are aligned to obtain anisotropic conductivity. USE - The composite material is useful in a textile or foam substrate to form an electrically conductive composite material in garments (all claimed), in sports rehabilitation, relaxation therapy, sports therapy, electrocardiogram measurements, fetal scalp electrodes, electroencephalography electrodes, functional electrical stimulation, neuromuscular electrical stimulation, transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation, haptic operations, electromyography, electrophysiology measurements and in a pacemaker or an automated external defibrillator. ADVANTAGE - The composite material: is flexible and conformal, comfortable, can make good contact with the skin, and is easy to don and remove; is soft and can also be cast into any desired shape, including a sleeve or a custom fit; is permits in many different industries and applications; is wearable and comfortable forms, e.g. foam or fabric; is free of hydrogel to couple the material to the skin; is flexible and conformal to the user and to other apparel and garments with which they may interact, they are easy to don and doff, inexpensive to fabricate, and not sticky compared to hydrogel; and allows superior electrical performance to be achieved while retaining good mechanical properties, the resulting provides (a) high surface area for efficient capacitive charge-discharge, (b) high ionic conductivity for low interfacial charge transfer, where the interfacial charge transfer can be viewed as made up of resistive and capacitive response, (c) low ohmic resistance and (d) excellent flexibility and toughness.
