NOVELTY - Producing isolated graphene sheets from supply of coke or coal powder involves forming intercalated coke or coal compound by electrochemical intercalation procedure which is conducted in intercalation reactor, reactor contains liquid solution electrolyte comprises intercalating agent, working electrode that contains coke or coal powder as active material in ionic contact with liquid solution electrolyte. The coke or coal powder is selected from petroleum coke, coal-derived coke, meso-phase coke, synthetic coke, leonardite, anthracite, lignite coal, bituminous coal, natural coal mineral powder, or combination. The counter electrode in ionic contact with liquid solution electrolyte. The current is imposed upon working electrode and counter electrode at current density for duration of time sufficient for effecting electrochemical intercalation of intercalating agent into interlayer spacing. USE - Method for producing isolated graphene sheets from supply of coke or coal powder. ADVANTAGE - The method enables to produce isolated graphene sheets from supply of coke or coal powder that improves chemical or mechanical compatibility of the graphene sheets. DETAILED DESCRIPTION - Producing isolated graphene sheets from supply of coke or coal powder involves forming intercalated coke or coal compound by electrochemical intercalation procedure which is conducted in intercalation reactor, reactor contains liquid solution electrolyte comprises intercalating agent, working electrode that contains coke or coal powder as active material in ionic contact with liquid solution electrolyte. The hexagonal carbon atomic interlayers are exfoliated and separated from intercalated coke or coal compound using ultrasonication, thermal shock exposure, mechanical shearing treatment, or combination to produce isolated graphene sheets. The intercalating agent includes a species selected from bronsted acid selected from phosphoric acid, dichloroacetic, or alkylsulfonic acid selected from methanesulfonic, ethanesulfonic, or 1-propanesulfonic, or combination.
