NOVELTY - Preparation of polygraphene membrane involves mixing graphite and sodium nitrate in sulfuric acid to form mixture (M1), adding potassium permanganate solution into the mixture (M1) to form a mixture (M2), adding hydrogen peroxide solution to the mixture (M2) to form a mixture (M3) comprising soluble manganese ions, filtering the mixture (M3) to form an aqueous suspension, centrifuging the aqueous suspension, ultrasonically processing the suspension to obtain graphene oxide sheets, acylating the graphene oxide sheets, and polymerizing the acylated graphene oxide sheet. USE - Preparation of polygraphene membrane used as filtration membrane for desalinating salt water to produce pure water (claimed) by separating salts, ions, metals, and organic pollutants from water. Can also be used for separating oil components, hydrogen, nitrogen, and methane from gaseous media or gas. ADVANTAGE - The method efficiently produces polygraphene membrane having excellent filtration and separation properties due to high permeability and selectivity towards various ions based on molecular sieving effect and diverse chemical interactions. The polygraphene membrane exhibits excellent performance in terms of permeate flux and salt rejection, compared to existing filtration membranes due to presence of narrow dimension of the nanocapillaries and the co-existence of sp2 aromatic channels with various oxygen functionalities.
