NOVELTY - Method for electrochemically depolymerizing lignin, involves using an oxygen reduction reaction electrode as cathode, using an ionic liquid or mixture of ionic liquid and organic solvent as a supporting electrolyte to carry out electrochemical reaction, and the oxygen gas undergoes 1-electron reduction or 2-electron reduction at the cathode. USE - The method is useful for electrochemically depolymerizing lignin. ADVANTAGE - The method improves efficiency of electrochemical depolymerization of lignin.
