NOVELTY - Synthesis of silica-coated graphene hybrid material involves treating graphene oxide with ammonium ions to provide ammonium-activated graphene oxide, treating ammonium-activated graphene oxide with solution comprising silica precursor(s), and silane coupling agent(s) containing functional group(s), grafting of functional group(s) on the surface of obtained silica-coated graphene oxide to provide functionalized silica-coated graphene oxide, and reducing the silica-coated graphene oxide to provide functionalized silica-coated graphene. USE - Synthesis of silica-coated graphene hybrid material used as catalyst carrier, and filler for composite materials, and used for drug delivery (all claimed). ADVANTAGE - The method enables improved synthesis of silica-coated graphene hybrid material having large surface areas, with improved productivity and without agglomeration. The functional group enhances the binding force of the hybrid material with other substrates for excellent mechanical performance. The silica self-assembling process effectively controls the growth position and growth speed of silica. DETAILED DESCRIPTION - Synthesis of silica-coated graphene hybrid material involves (i) treating graphene oxide with ammonium ions to provide ammonium-activated graphene oxide, (ii) treating ammonium-activated graphene oxide with solution comprising silica precursor(s), and silane coupling agent(s) containing functional group(s) to provide self-assembly of silica nanoparticles on the surface of the ammonium-activated graphene oxide and covalent bonding between nanoparticles and the surface to provide silica-coated graphene oxide, grafting of functional group(s) on the surface of silica-coated graphene oxide to provide functionalized silica-coated graphene oxide, and (iii) reducing the functionalized silica-coated graphene oxide to provide functionalized silica-coated graphene.
