NOVELTY - A composition comprises lithium dioxide (LiO2), reduced graphene oxide, and metal catalyst or its residue. USE - A composition for electrochemical cell (claimed). ADVANTAGE - The crystalline LiO2 formed with Ir-rGO cathode is surprisingly stable for a relatively long period of time. DETAILED DESCRIPTION - INDEPENDENT CLAIMS are included for: (1) electrochemical cell comprising anode which contains lithium metal, cathode containing LiO2 that is substantially free of Li2O2 and Li2O, and electrolyte; and (2) formation of LiO2 which involves providing electrochemical cell consisting of porous oxygen carbon cathode, lithium anode, current collector, and electrolyte, and discharging electrochemical cell to form a discharge product, where discharge product contains LiO2, porous oxygen carbon cathode contains reduced graphene oxide and catalyst, and discharge product is free of Li2O and Li2O2.
