NOVELTY - The spray gun (100) has a solenoid (16) is coupled to the cartridge module (30) and moveable between a distal position in which the cartridge module abuts a first abutment surface of the body (4) and a proximal position in which the cartridge module abuts a second abutment surface on the fluid adjuster nut. The cartridge module from the distal position to the proximal position lifts a needle (5) is located within the fluid passage from a seated position in which the needle forms a seal (6) between a spray tip (3) on the body and a distal tip of the needle is moved. An open position in which the distal tip of the needle is lifted off the spray tip to define a gap between the tip of the needle and the spray tip. USE - Automatic spray gun for applying coating to substrate i.e. food tray or container, in food packaging industry. Can also be used for applying graphene to substrate. ADVANTAGE - The solenoid and cartridge module beneficially provide rapid and accurate actuation of the spray gun between the seated position and the open position. Controlling the proximal position of the cartridge module has the effect of allowing the flow rate of coating material from the spray tip to also be accurately controlled. The spray gun is capable of applying a food safe coating to the surface of containers made from a fibrous material. Applying the coating in a reliable and predictable manner is important for ensuring the quality of the coating on the container. The plastic container works well as it is robust thus ensuring the food contained within the container does not get damaged.
