NOVELTY - Preparing (M1) elastomer filled with conductive 2-dimentional (2D) nanoparticles or combination of 2D nanoparticles that enhances conductivity, comprises: e.g. (b) blending the elastomer polymer precursor and at least one layered material which is capable of being exfoliated into conductive 2D nanoparticles under shear sufficient to exfoliate the layered material in the elastomer polymer precursor until conductive 2D nanoparticles are formed to provide conductive 2D nanoparticle-filled polymer precursor; and (c) mixing under curing conditions to form an elastomer (ia) the conductive 2D nanoparticle-filled polymer precursor and the elastomer polymer curing agent, (iia) the elastomer polymer precursor and the conductive 2D nanoparticle-filled curing agent or (iiia) the 2D nanoparticle-filled polymer precursor and the 2D nanoparticle-filled curing agent, where at least one of the 2D nanoparticle fillings is conductive. USE - The methods are useful for preparing elastomer filled with conductive 2D nanoparticles or combination of 2D nanoparticles that enhances conductivity and fabricating a sensor (claimed). ADVANTAGE - The methods are cost-effective and scalable, and constitute a commercializable entry into various sensors useful in medical devices, fitness monitors, and related wearable devices and items. DETAILED DESCRIPTION - Preparing (M1) elastomer filled with conductive 2-dimentional (2D) nanoparticles or combination of 2D nanoparticles that enhances conductivity, comprises: (a) providing elastomer polymer precursor, elastomer polymer curing agent and at least one layered material; (b) (i) blending the elastomer polymer precursor and at least one layered material which is capable of being exfoliated into conductive 2D nanoparticles under shear sufficient to exfoliate the layered material in the elastomer polymer precursor until conductive 2D nanoparticles are formed to provide conductive 2D nanoparticle-filled polymer precursor, and/or (ii) blending the elastomer polymer curing agent and at least one layered material which is capable of being exfoliated into conductive 2D nanoparticles under shear sufficient to exfoliate the layered material in the elastomer polymer precursor until conductive 2D nanoparticles are formed to provide conductive 2D nanoparticle-filled polymer precursor to provide conductive 2D nanoparticle-filled curing agent; and (c) mixing under curing conditions to form an elastomer (ia) the conductive 2D nanoparticle-filled polymer precursor and the elastomer polymer curing agent, (iia) the elastomer polymer precursor and the conductive 2D nanoparticle-filled curing agent or (iiia) the 2D nanoparticle-filled polymer precursor and the 2D nanoparticle-filled curing agent, where at least one of the 2D nanoparticle fillings is conductive. INDEPENDENT CLAIMS are also included for: (1) the elastomer filled with 2D nanoparticles; (2) fabricating (M2) a sensor, comprising either coating, attaching or inserting an elastomer filled with 2D nanoparticles to a suitable substrate, molding or casting an elastomer filled with 2D nanoparticles or forming an elastomer filled with 2D nanoparticles forming the elastomer into an appropriate shape and curing; (3) a sensor prepared by the method; and (4) a sensor comprising (a1) a cured, molded or cast elastomer filled with conductive 2D nanoparticles, (b1) electrical leads, electrical connectors or electrodes attached and (c1) optionally, an adhesive coating.
