NOVELTY - Obtaining graphene oxide, comprises: (a) adding an acid and a salt to graphite for obtaining a graphite oxide; and (b) exfoliating the graphite oxide by mixing it. USE - The method is useful for obtaining graphene oxide (claimed) in the form of monolayer graphene oxide flakes, which are useful for manufacturing graphene oxide films. ADVANTAGE - The method: avoids addition of other components in step (a) or (b) (claimed) and leads to much higher reaction yields without requiring the need of nitric acid or sodium nitrate; utilizes high shear mixer for high shear mixing which provides an excellent intermixing between the reactants and the starting graphite material, thus producing graphene oxide during the reaction stage, while shortening considerably the oxidation reaction times down to minutes (i.e. takes only 60 minutes to complete when compared to the previous method which took more than 7200 minutes (5 days)), thus reducing production times; allows for high functionalization level of graphene oxide; provides high monolayer graphene oxide flakes content i.e. greater than 99.8%, thus providing high total production yield; utilizes only sulfuric acid and potassium permanganate, hence economical, faster and environmentally friendly; is an easily scalable production method and exhibits very good reproducibility; and utilizes only water for the cleaning of the reaction mixtures, thus making it greener and at the same time much shorter process.
