NOVELTY - Composite material, comprises: a substrate; and a coating on the substrate, where the coating comprises diamond-like carbon (DLC) and carbonaceous multi-layered nanoparticulate (CMLN), at least a portion of the CMLN is situated at the interface between the coating and the substrate. USE - The composite material is useful in a mechanical component. ADVANTAGE - The composite material has better tribological properties than diamond-like carbon on its own, even where much of the carbonaceous multi-layered nanoparticulate is situated away from the outer surface of the coating. DETAILED DESCRIPTION - INDEPENDENT CLAIMS are also included for: mechanical component comprising a composite material, where the mechanical component is a bearing or a camshaft; preparing a composite material, comprising (a) depositing carbonaceous multi-layered nanoparticulate (CMLN) onto a surface of a substrate to form a CMLN-deposited surface, and (b) depositing diamond-like carbon (DLC) onto the CMLN-deposited surface to form the composite material; and composite material obtained by the process.
