NOVELTY - Method for desalination of water, involves flowing salt water through a free-standing single-layer membrane of nanoporous graphene having a first planar side that makes contact with the salt water and an opposing second planar side from which desalinated water exits. USE - The method is useful for desalination of water (claimed). ADVANTAGE - The method provides desalinated water with at least 99% of salt ions removed, can be performed with negligible power input or even without power input, and provides 3 levels of desalination. DETAILED DESCRIPTION - Method for desalination of water, involves flowing salt water through a free-standing single-layer membrane of nanoporous graphene having a first planar side that makes contact with the salt water and an opposing second planar side from which desalinated water exits, where the membrane contains nanopores having a size of 1 nm, along with absence of pores above 1 nm in size, the nanopores of 1 nm size have pore edges passivated with silicon, salt ions in the salt water are blocked from passing through the membrane while water in the salt water passes through the membrane to result in desalinated water exiting the membrane.
