NOVELTY - Composite material comprises a matrix material and 0.5-50 vol.% of nano-scaled graphene plates, which are aligned substantially parallel to each other along at least a first specified direction in the matrix material. USE - The composite materials are useful for high temperature structural applications. ADVANTAGE - The composite materials exhibit a controlled degree of preferred orientation. DETAILED DESCRIPTION - An INDEPENDENT CLAIM is included for production of composite material, comprising: (a) providing a mixture of nano-scaled graphene plates and a matrix material in a fluent state; (b) extruding the mixture to form a filament, where the nano-scaled graphene plates are aligned along a filament axis; (c) aligning many segments of the filament in a first direction, or moving the filament back and forth along a first direction and its opposite direction, to form a nano-scaled graphene plate-matrix filament preform; and (d) consolidating the preform. DESCRIPTION OF DRAWING(S) - The figure shows a schematic of nano-sized graphene plates in comparison with carbon nanotubes.
