NOVELTY - Electrochemical device comprises: an air cathode comprising a solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) on a carbon support; a metal-containing anode; a porous separator; and an electrolyte comprising an aprotic solvent. USE - The device is useful for alkaline earth air batteries. ADVANTAGE - The device: allows tailoring of thickness, distribution, and composition of the SEI prior to introduction onto carbon support; has improved discharge specific capacity over control cells; utilizes lithiated cathode has better tolerance towards current, showing substantial improvement of rate performance; utilizes SEI layer that to provide for improvements in areal energy and power density without requiring additional materials or complex processes during following discharge-charge cycles; and utilizes electrochemical catalysts to improve rate performance, cyclability, and efficiency of devices. DETAILED DESCRIPTION - An INDEPENDENT CLAIM is also included for making an air cathode, comprising discharging or charging electrochemical device comprising an air cathode comprising a carbon support, a metal-containing anode, a porous separator, and an electrolyte comprising a salt and an aprotic solvent to form a solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) on the carbon support.
