NOVELTY - The medium (31) has an upper layer formed among stacked layers of a perpendicular magnetic layer (23) and including polycrystal grains that are selected as a cobalt chromium-base alloy, a cobalt platinum-base alloy, a cobalt chromium platinum-base alloy, and a cobalt platinum chromium-base alloy. A protection layer (24) makes contact with the upper layer of the perpendicular magnetic layer, and includes a single graphene layer and an amorphous carbon layer. The single graphene layer or the graphene stack is bonded in parallel to a crystal plane of the polycrystal grains. USE - Perpendicular magnetic recording medium such as hard disk drive (HDD) for a magnetic storage apparatus (claimed). ADVANTAGE - The medium has better friction resistance effect, sliding contact resistance effect, and corrosion resistance effect, and ensures that a layer quality of the amorphous carbon layer can easily change based on deposition conditions. The medium ensures wetting the protection layer with respect to lubricant while forming a lubricant layer without deteriorating the crystallinity of the single graphene layer or the graphene stack. DETAILED DESCRIPTION - The single graphene layer or the graphene stack of the protection layer is doped with nitrogen. An INDEPENDENT CLAIM is also included for a magnetic storage apparatus.
