NOVELTY - Producing graphene-silicon nanowire hybrid material composition involves (a) preparing a catalyst metal-coated mixture mass by mixing an exfoliated graphite flakes or graphene sheets with silicon particles containing pure silicon and depositing a catalytic metal in the form of nano particles or a coating onto a surfaces of silicon particles and (b) exposing the catalyst metal-coated mixture mass at 300-2000 degrees C to enable a catalytic metal-catalyzed growth of multiple silicon nanowires from silicon particles as a feed material to form graphene-silicon nanowire hybrid material composition. USE - Producing graphene-silicon nanowire hybrid material composition used in lithium battery and battery electrode (all claimed). Uses include but not limited to electric vehicle, renewable energy storage and smart grid applications. ADVANTAGE - The process enables silicon nanowire to grow from both silicon particle surfaces and surfaces of graphene sheets. DETAILED DESCRIPTION - Producing graphene-silicon nanowire hybrid material composition involves (a) preparing a catalyst metal-coated mixture mass by mixing an exfoliated graphite flakes or graphene sheets with silicon particles containing pure silicon and depositing a catalytic metal in the form of nano particles or a coating onto a surfaces of silicon particles and (b) exposing the catalyst metal-coated mixture mass at 300-2000 degrees C to enable a catalytic metal-catalyzed growth of multiple silicon nanowires from silicon particles as a feed material to form graphene-silicon nanowire hybrid material composition. The silicon nanowires have a diameter of less than 100 nm and length-to-diameter ratio of at least 5. The exfoliated graphite flakes have flake thickness of 100 nm-1 mu m. The graphene sheets have thickness of 0.34-100 nm. The silicon particles have particle diameter of 0.2-20 mu m. The nano particles have size of 0.5-100 nm. The coating have thickness of 1-100 nm. The pure silicon contains at least 99.9 wt.% of silicon element or silicon alloy or mixture. The silicon alloy or mixture contains 70-99.9 wt.% silicon.
