NOVELTY - The membrane device (104) has a porous ceramic element which comprises a first support portion (112) operable to support an active layer (108) and comprises a second support portion. The second support portion has a higher average pore size than the average pore size of the first support portion. The second support portion comprises a lattice structure that has a porosity percentage of greater than 40%. The porous ceramic element has a tensile strength operable to withstand feed application pressure of greater than 100kPa. The first support portion or the second support portion comprise alumina, titania, zirconia, silicon carbide, hydroxyapatite, silicates, zeolite or metal oxides. The active layer comprises a transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) or graphene. USE - Membrane device for water purification, chemical disinfection, solar disinfection, boiling, sedimentation and distillation. ADVANTAGE - The membrane device has improved properties such as high sieving electivity, low energy cost, and higher water flux rate for sustainable water treatment and modern water treatment industry. The porous ceramic member has a tensile strength operable to withstand feed application pressure of ≥ 100 kPa.
