NOVELTY - Composition comprises: at least one carbonaceous particulate material comprised of synthetic graphite particles (SG) having a less than or equal to 4 m2/g Brunauer, Emmett and Teller-specific surface area (BET SSA); and at least one carbonaceous particulate material comprised of natural graphite particles coated with non-graphitic carbon (cNG) and having less than or equal to 8 m2/g BET SSA, where content of the cNG particles is 5-75%, or 5-65% by weight of the total weight of the composition. USE - The composition is useful for preparing negative electrode of a lithium-ion battery for electric vehicle, a hybrid electric vehicle, or an energy storage cell, natural graphite coated with non-graphitic carbon (cNG) for preparing a composition suitable for being used as an active material in a negative electrode, and natural graphite coated with non-graphitic carbon as a carbonaceous additive to increase the energy density and charge rate performance of a lithium-ion battery while maintaining the power density of the cell compared to a cell with an anode absent the carbonaceous additive (all claimed). ADVANTAGE - The batteries: have fast charging performance while not negatively affecting the other relevant functional properties of the battery; and have high energy density and specific energy combined with a high power performance due to an average cell voltage of 3.5 V and the light weight electrode materials. DETAILED DESCRIPTION - INDEPENDENT CLAIMS are also included for: (1) slurry, comprising composition in a liquid, where liquid is water or a water/alcohol mixture; (2) making the composition, comprising mixing a synthetic graphite (SG) with a natural graphite coated with non-graphitic carbon, optionally in the presence of a liquid such as water; (3) electrode, comprising composition as active material; (4) lithium-ion battery, comprising composition as active material in the anode of battery; and (5) electric vehicle, a hybrid electric vehicle, or an energy storage cell comprising a lithium-ion battery.
