NOVELTY - A 2-amino-3-(3,4-dihydroxyphenyl)alkylamide compound (I) is new. USE - A 2-amino-3-(3,4-dihydroxyphenyl)alkylamide compound, or its salt or solvate for composition used for forming polymerized product (all claimed). DETAILED DESCRIPTION - A 2-amino-3-(3,4-dihydroxyphenyl)alkylamide compound of formula (I), or its salt or solvate, is new. L=linker of formula asterisk-X-(Y1)m1-Z-; asterisk=bond between X and carbon marked as asteriskasterisk; X=bond (null), -C(=O)-, -C(=O)NH-, -C(=O)N(6-10C aryl)-, -C(=O)N(2-10C alkenyl)-, or -C(=O)N(1-10C alkyl)-, where 6-10C aryl is optionally substituted by halo, -R', -OR', and/or -C(=O)OR; Y1=-CH2CH2O-, -OCH2CH2-, or -CH2CH2-, where CH2 is optionally substituted with 1-2 Me groups; Z=-(CH2)m2-, where CH2 is optionally substituted with 1 or 2 Me groups; R'=H, 2-5C alkenyl, or 1-5C alkyl; m1=0-10; and m2=0-5, provided that L is not -C(=O)NHCH2-. INDEPENDENT CLAIMS are included for: (1) composition comprising greater than or equal to 1 compound (I), copper(II) salt, copper(I) ligand, and azido compound of formula (R-N3) (A); (2) reaction product of compound (I) and compound (A); and (3) coating a surface which involves contacting at least a portion of the surface with the composition, where at least a portion of the surface is coated with a reaction product of the compound (I) and the azido compound (A) to provide a surface coating. R=chromophore, fluorogenic molecule, oligonucleotide, nucleic acid, polyethylene glycol, peptide, polypeptide, protein, therapeutic agent, or lipid.
