ADVANTAGE - The cathode active material has great energy density, cost-effective, and exhibits greater electrochemical reversibility and resistance to oxygen generation during use. DETAILED DESCRIPTION - Cathode active material comprises metal compound MaRb(I) and metal oxide compound MxOy(II). The metal compound and the metal oxide are in contact. M=metal; R=independently selected so that MaRbis an inorganic or organometallic compound or complex; and a and b, and x and y=positive nonzero real number. INDEPENDENT CLAIMS are included for: 1. a cathode material, which comprises:a cathode active material including metal compound MaRb(I) and metal oxide compound MxOy(II), and an electrically-conductive material, such that one or both of the metal compound and the metal oxide are in contact with the electrically-conductive material; and 2. a battery having a cathode (34), which comprises: a cathode active material.
