NOVELTY - Preparing metal on carbonaceous material comprises: (1) oxidation step comprising the oxidation of a carbonaceous material in the presence of an oxidizing agent in order to obtain a carbonaceous material having carboxylic groups and carboxylic anhydrides on the surface; (2) activation step comprising the heat treatment under an inert atmosphere of the carbonaceous material obtained at the end of step (1) in order to obtain a carbonaceous material having carbon vacancies; (3) impregnation step comprising the reaction of the carbonaceous material obtained at the end of step (2) with a metal precursor comprising a metal with ligands in a solvent under an inert atmosphere; and (4) removal step comprising the removal of ligands from the metal precursor under a controlled atmosphere. USE - The process is useful for preparing metal on carbonaceous material which is used as a catalyst, as a biosensor or as a gas capturing agent for preparing lone metal atom catalysts, biosensors or gas scavenging agents (all claimed). ADVANTAGE - The process: yields 0.01-10 (preferably 0.1-4) mass% metal; and selectively produces atoms isolated on carbonaceous material in a stable manner and exhibiting a high metallic charge.
