NOVELTY - Battery cell comprises electrode stack provided with cathode, anode and separator which electrically separates the cathode and the anode from one another, where the separator assigned is permeable to ions which move between the cathode and the anode while generating a current flow during of a battery charging process or a battery discharging process, separator control (21) assigned by which the separator is electrostatically charged, where the separator and the ions have the same charges in the electrostatically charged state, which interrupts the current flow between the cathode and the anode, so that the separator acts as a shutdown separator, which interrupts the charging or discharging process of the battery cell when actuated accordingly, in particular to prevent thermal runaway of the battery cell. USE - Battery cell for use in a battery charging process or a battery discharging process of a battery cell i.e. lithium-ion battery cell. ADVANTAGE - The separator is permeable to ions moving between the cathode and the anode to form a current flow during a battery charging process or a battery discharging process. The shutdown function of the separator is implemented with a greater number of degrees of freedom compared to the existing technology.
