NOVELTY - Producing (P1) at least one decorated clay mineral nanosheet, comprises: (a) providing at least one double-layer clay mineral nanosheet comprising a first nanolayer having an inner surface and an outer surface, a second nanolayer having an inner and an outer surface, where the second nanolayer is the same or different from the first nanolayer, and an interlayer disposed between the inner surface of the first nanolayer and the inner surface of the second nanolayer, where the interlayer comprises many cations; (b) decorating the outer surface of the first nanolayer and the outer surface of the second nanolayer with many nanoparticles, two dimensional (2D) nanosheets, e.g. graphene sheets, or one dimensional (1D) structures e.g. nanowires or nanotubes to form the double-layer decorated clay mineral nanosheet; and (c) optionally cleaving the double-layer decorated clay mineral nanosheet to form at least one single-layer decorated clay mineral nanosheet. USE - The process is useful for producing the decorated clay mineral nanosheet which is used: in suspension; for wrinkling 2D materials e.g. graphene, graphene oxide, or reduced graphene oxide (all claimed); and in diverse industrial and pharmaceutical applications. ADVANTAGE - The process: prepares Janus-type clay mineral nanosheets by decorating non-functionalized double-layer clay mineral nanosheets with the nanoparticles, nanowires or 2D-nanosheets; and utilizes nanoparticles that can be magnetic nanoparticles (e.g. superparamagnetic nanoparticles), thus enabling the manipulation of the clay mineral nanosheets using magnetism. DETAILED DESCRIPTION - Producing (P1) at least one decorated clay mineral nanosheet, comprises: (a) providing at least one double-layer clay mineral nanosheet comprising a first nanolayer having an inner surface and an outer surface, a second nanolayer having an inner and an outer surface, where the second nanolayer is the same or different from the first nanolayer, and an interlayer disposed between the inner surface of the first nanolayer and the inner surface of the second nanolayer, where the interlayer comprises many cations; (b) decorating the outer surface of the first nanolayer and the outer surface of the second nanolayer with many nanoparticles, two dimensional (2D) nanosheets, e.g. graphene sheets, or one dimensional (1D) structures e.g. nanowires or nanotubes to form the double-layer decorated clay mineral nanosheet; and (c) optionally cleaving the double-layer decorated clay mineral nanosheet to form at least one single-layer decorated clay mineral nanosheet, where the single-layer nanosheet is decorated with the nanoparticles, 2D nanosheets, or 1D structures on one side only. INDEPENDENT CLAIMS are also included for: double-layer decorated clay mineral nanosheet (N1) comprising (i) a first nanolayer having an inner surface and an outer surface, (ii) a second nanolayer having an inner surface and an outer surface, where the second nanolayer is the same or different from the first nanolayer, (iii) an interlayer disposed between the inner surface of the first nanolayer and the inner surface of the second nanolayer, where the interlayer comprises the cations, the nanoparticles, e.g. magnetic nanoparticles, 2D nanosheets, or 1D structures e.g. nanowires or nanotubes is disposed on the outer surface of the first nanolayer and the outer surface of the second nanolayer; ingle-layer nanoparticle-decorated clay mineral nanosheet (N2) comprising a nanolayer having a first surface and a second surface, where the first surface has disposed on its the nanoparticles, e.g. magnetic nanoparticles, and the second surface is free of the nanoparticles, optionally the second surface has disposed on its nanoparticles other than the nanoparticles disposed on the first surface; uspension comprising the double-layer (N1) and/or single-layer (N2) decorated clay mineral nanosheet; use of a single-layer or double-layer clay nanosheet (N1) or (N2), or the suspension, for wrinkling a 2D material, preferably for wrinkling 2D materials e.g. graphene, graphene oxide, or reduced graphene oxide; and wrinkling a 2D layer comprising (I) contacting a 2D layer material e.g. graphene or graphene oxide with (A) a single-layer nanoparticle-decorated clay mineral nanosheet comprising a nanolayer having a first surface and a second surface, where the first surface has disposed on its the nanoparticles and the second surface is free of the nanoparticles, or (B) the double-layer nanoparticle-decorated clay mineral double-layer nanoparticle-decorated clay mineral nanosheet, (II) allowing the 2D layer material to adhere to the first surface which has disposed on its the nanoparticles or adhere to the outer surface of the first nanolayer and the outer surface of the second nanolayer which have disposed on its the nanoparticles, and depositing the product of step (II) on a substrate.
