NOVELTY - A water permeable membrane (100) comprises a porous support (120), and a crosslinked graphene oxide composite layer (113) formed by reacting a mixture comprising a graphene oxide and a crosslinker and in physical communication with the porous support. The crosslinker comprises a benzyl compound (I), a biphenyl compound (II), a triphenyl methyl-containing compound (III), a carbazolyl-based compound (IV) and an ether-containing compound (V) or their salts. USE - Water permeable membrane is used for removing solute from unprocessed solution (all claimed). Can also be used for water treatment, desalination of saline water, and water removal. ADVANTAGE - The water permeable membrane has high water flux, and excellent salt rejection ability and can be manufactured environmentally-friendly and economical method. The membrane is permeable to water and water vapor and impermeable to ionic compounds and heavy metals. DETAILED DESCRIPTION - A water permeable membrane comprises a porous support, and a crosslinked graphene oxide composite layer formed by reacting a mixture comprising a graphene oxide and a crosslinker and in physical communication with the porous support. The crosslinker comprises a benzyl compound of formula (I), a biphenyl compound of formula (II), a triphenyl methyl-containing compound of formula (III), a carbazolyl-based compound of formula (IV) and an ether-containing compound of formula (V) or their salts. R1-R4 = H, OH, NH2, CH3, CO2H, -CO2-CnH2n+1, or SO3H in which OH, NH2, and SO3H are not attached directly to N, O, or-OCH2-; R5 = H, CH3, or C2H5; R6-R9 = -(CH2)n-, -CH2CH2O(CH2)n-, phenyl, -phenyl-CH2-, or -phenyl-CH2O(CH2)n-; n,m = 0-10;and k = 0 or 1. INDEPENDENT CLAIMS are included for the following: (1) formation of the water permeable membrane, which involves curing a coating mixture applied to a substrate at 50-150 degrees C for 1 minute to 5 hours. The coating mixture comprises an aqueous solution comprising an optionally substituted graphene oxide and a crosslinker rested for 30 minutes to 12 hours to create a coating mixture; and (2) method of removing solute from an unprocessed solution, which involves exposing the unprocessed solution to the membrane.
