NOVELTY - A battery electrode comprises electrode coating layer comprising 1-95 wt.% silicon (Si), and water-soluble maleic anhydride- or maleic acid-containing polymer binder. The polymer binder comprises poly(methyl vinyl ether-alt-maleic anhydride); poly(methyl vinyl ether-alt-maleic acid); poly(styrene-alt-maleic acid) sodium salts; poly(styrene-co-maleic acid), partial isobutyl esters; poly(styrene-co-maleic acid), partial isobutyl/methyl mixed esters; poly(styrene-alt-maleic anhydride), partial methyl esters; poly(isobutylene-alt-maleic anhydride); poly(maleic anhydride-alt-1-octadecene); poly(ethylene-alt-maleic anhydride); polypropylene-graft-maleic anhydride; polyisoprene-graft-maleic anhydride; or polystyrene-block-poly(ethylene-ran-butylene)-block-polystyrene-graft-maleic anhydride. USE - A battery electrode used in lithium ion battery (claimed). ADVANTAGE - The battery electrodes for Li-ion batteries have high theoretical capacity room temperature, which is 10 times that of conventional graphite anodes; relatively low lithiation/delithiation potential; use silicon that is abundant and has low price; and have low environmental impact of silicon. DETAILED DESCRIPTION - An INDEPENDENT CLAIM is included for forming a battery electrode which involves creating an electrode coating layer from an electrode slurry comprising an aqueous solution of a maleic anhydride- or maleic acid-containing polymer binder and 1-95 wt.% Si powder, with optional additives; fabricating a battery electrode by coating the slurry on a current collector (107A, 107B); and pyrolyzing the electrode coating layer; where the polymer binder comprises poly(methyl vinyl ether-alt-maleic anhydride), poly(methyl vinyl ether-alt-maleic acid), poly(styrene-alt-maleic acid) sodium salts, poly(styrene-co-maleic acid), partial isobutyl esters, poly(styrene-co-maleic acid), partial isobutyl/methyl mixed esters, poly(styrene-alt-maleic anhydride), partial methyl esters, poly(isobutylene-alt-maleic anhydride), poly(maleic anhydride-alt-1-octadecene), poly(ethylene-alt-maleic anhydride), polypropylene-graft-maleic anhydride, polyisoprene-graft-maleic anhydride, or polystyrene-block-poly(ethylene-ran-butylene)-block-polystyrene-graft-maleic anhydride.
