NOVELTY - A cathode for zinc-iodine redox flow battery, includes a first layer formed from a first conductive material, and a second layer in contact with the first layer, where the second layer adsorbs triiodide ion and the triiodide ion is reduced at an interface (20) between the first layer and second layer. USE - Cathode e.g. double-layered cathode for battery (all claimed) e.g. aqueous rechargeable zinc-iodine battery. ADVANTAGE - The cathode provides the zinc-iodine battery with high energy density, low cost and excellent safety. The cathode structure enables formation and reduction of adsorbed iodine ions at the conductive layer/adsorptive layer interface, for suppressing shuttling of iodine ions. The zinc-iodine battery exhibits Coulombic efficiency of up to 95.6% and voltage efficiency of up to 91.3% in aqueous zinc iodide electrolyte even at high-rate intermittent charging/discharging, without need of ion selective membranes. DETAILED DESCRIPTION - INDEPENDENT CLAIMS are included for: (1) a battery, which includes the cathode and a zinc anode (12); (2) method for making the cathode, which involves: (a) electro-polymerizing an organic polymer film onto an electroconductive structure to form an adsorptive layer (19) on the electroconductive structure; and (b) contacting the electroconductive structure with a conductive layer (18); and (3) method for manufacturing double-layered cathode (14) used in aqueous rechargeable zinc-iodine battery (10), which involves: (a) placing a conductive substrate, a reference electrode, and a counter electrode in an aqueous solution containing a monomer; (b) applying an electrical potential for at least one cycle between the reference electrode and the conductive substrate to form a conductive polymer on the conductive substrate, for forming adsorptive layer; and (c) contacting the adsorptive layer with conductive layer.
