NOVELTY - An electrochemical cell comprises an anode comprising an alkali metal, an alkali metal alloy, silicon, carbon or a silicon carbon composite material, a cathode comprising a metal sulfide, and a liquid electrolyte having polysulfide solubility of less than 500 mM. USE - Electrochemical cell e.g. nickel-cadmium battery and lithium ion battery used in cell assembly (claimed). ADVANTAGE - The electrochemical cell has high gravimetric energy, volumetric energy, broad operating and storage temperature range, and excellent electrochemical performance, mechanical robustness and interfacial stability between the cathode and the electrolyte resulting in high sulfur utilization and cyclability.
