NOVELTY - The method involves passing a current through the cell to intercalate anions into the graphitic positive electrode so as to exfoliate the graphitic positive electrode to produce the graphene and/or graphite nanoplatelet structures. The intercalating anion is sulfate. The electrolyte is an aqueous solution of a cobalt (II) salt and sodium sulfate. The electrolyte is an aqueous solution of cobalt (II) sulfate and sodium sulfate. USE - Method for production in electrochemical cell of graphene and/or graphite nanoplatelet structures having thickness of less than one hundred nanometers. ADVANTAGE - The method make use of a metal cation which prevents or reduces oxidation of the product, leading to high quality, low oxygen content material with comparatively little amount defects.
