NOVELTY - A cross-linkable or cross-linked polymer (I), is new. USE - New polymer used as binder and coating agent in composition for forming electrolyte and electrode material, for electrochemical cell of electrochemical accumulator and electrochromic device e.g. lithium battery, sodium battery, potassium battery and magnesium battery (all claimed). ADVANTAGE - The polymer is inexpensive, non-toxic and has high ionic conductivity when salted and excellent stability. DETAILED DESCRIPTION - A cross-linkable or cross-linked polymer of formula (I) or its cross-linked version, is new. X=functional core, polymeric or not, derived from compound comprising polyol and/or polyamine functionalities with 3-10, preferably 3-6, active hydrogens; P =polymer chain having ability to coordinate with cations, such as polyesters, polycarbonates and their copolymers; P =polymeric chain different from P and having ability or not to coordinate with cations; P =polymeric chain different from P and P and having ability or not to coordinate with cations; R=substituent comprising crosslinkable reactive function; R =substituent bearing no crosslinkable function; m=2 or more, which corresponds to the total number of branches of the polymeric chain comprising P ; p,q,n=0 or more or less than m;and m+p+q=equal to or greater than the functionality of the compound from which core X is derived. INDEPENDENT CLAIMS are included for the following: preparation of polymer (I); composition, which comprises the polymer and at least one ionic salt; electrolyte, which comprises the polymer or the composition; electrode material, which comprises the polymer or the composition and at least one electrochemically active material; electrochemical cell, which comprises at least an anode, a cathode, an electrolyte and optionally a separator. At least one of the anode, the cathode, and the electrolyte and of the separator comprises the polymer or the composition or electrode material or the electrolyte; electrochemical accumulator, which comprises the electrochemical cell; electrochromic device, which comprises a negative electrode, a positive electrode and an electrolyte, and each forming a film. At least one of the positive electrode, the negative electrode, and the electrolyte comprises the polymer or at least one of the positive electrode, the negative electrode, and the electrolyte comprises the composition, at least one of the positive electrode and the negative electrode comprises an electrode material and the electrolyte; and use of the polymer or the composition in the manufacture of an electrode material, electrolyte or battery separator.
