NOVELTY - Optical modulator comprises at least one active media, where the active media comprises an optical waveguide; a nanoscale oxide spacer adjacent to a working region of the waveguide; and at least one monolayer graphene sheet adjacent to the spacer. USE - The optical modulator is useful as enabling device for on-chip optical interconnects. ADVANTAGE - The integrated optical modulator has high modulation speed, small footprint and large optical bandwidth.
