NOVELTY - The cycler (100) has a heating unit comprising an emitter (102) configured to emit electromagnetic radiations. A stage (104) is configured to support a reaction cassette (110). The reaction cassette defines the region made of a thermally conductive material. The region is configured to host a volume of reagents and defining a first surface facing the one or more reagents and a second surface opposite to the first surface. The stage is configured to position the reaction cassette such that the second surface is exposed to the electromagnetic radiations emitted by the emitter. A temperature detection unit (114) is configured to detect temperature of the volume of reagents. A controller (116) is operatively connected with any or a combination of the heating unit, the stage and the temperature detection unit. The region at the second surface has high electromagnetic radiation absorptivity. USE - Temperature cycler for small volume chemical reaction used in myriad of applications. ADVANTAGE - The temperature cycler is economical, energy efficient and easy to manufacture. The temperature cycler does not require optical components such as focusing lenses or beam splitters. The temperature cycler is portable, is used at point-of-care settings and is powered with a light-weight, small capacity battery. The reaction cassette is economical and easy to fabricate. The reaction cassette is single use, robust and minimizes the risk of cross-contamination. The dramatically reduced time for thermal cycling allows patient wait time to be minimized. The portability, costeffectiveness, and energy-efficiency that even rural health care centers, with unreliable or no electricity can afford and use it to diagnose patients quickly.
